Newton, Mass. -- General Compression (GC), the privately held developer of an air energy storage technology for renewable energy systems, today announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with ConocoPhillips, the oil and gas company.

Compressed-air energy storage plants are tackling the problem of holding captured wind energy so it can be available on demand to reduce dependency on coal. The air generated by windmills during peak hours can be pumped into underground cavities to compress the trapped air so when it is tapped, a large percentage of the stored energy is released.

For the purpose of defining the genre: energy storage devices include flywheel energy storage systems (FES) capacitors, batteries, fuel cells, compresses air energy storage systems and others. Of these, the FES, capacitors and super conducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems hold the largest market shares.

Energy storage is considered a crucial technology for smart grid as it provides higher efficiency, lower pollution and lower transmission and generation costs. Energy storage also supports greater integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.

By sending energy back to the grid, electric cars could serve as a backup to wind and solar. Utility engineers say that the grid needs to be balanced by some form of storage when renewables compose between 10 and 20 percent of the overall capacity. Backup storage includes pumped hydro, compressed air energy, battery farms and electric car batteries

Making efficient use of renewable energy such as wind and solar energy requires storage of energy. One of the options to do this is by compressed-air storage; which has been possible in underground caverns only till now.
